The starting point of this project is a simple, recurrent dream: envisioning a community of vocal and dance artists who cut across the borders separating these two kindred and rival disciplines. Creating such a community, in which everyone sings and dances, is both a way to cultivate the dream of a total art form and a spiritual gesture celebrating the most vulnerable and malleable parts of our being: our muscles, our diaphragms, our voices. What (in)abilities are our bodies capable of?

In 2020, François Chaignaud and Geoffroy Jourdain brought together thirteen artists from various backgrounds at the intersection of song and dance, laying the foundations of a common practice, the matrix of the forthcoming production. Developed over nearly three years, this practice seeks to situate the bodies in a context where they can learn, invent new skills, transform themselves, and reach a state of transition. This individual and collective process is not simply propaedeutic: the quasi-mystical faith in the malleability of our bodies runs through the entire project.

t u m u l u s reveals the (in)capacity of living bodies faced with what surpasses and abandons them; it embodies the gesture of survivors who resist; it conveys the sound of an era imagined for the end of times, or the (musical) edifice that watches over the dead.
